The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is like a modern day AC Cobra!

Just look at it! It’s like a shrunken, de engined, modern take on a hardtop AC Cobra.

It’s totally transformed the MX-5. And we love Mazda for doing it.

Kinja'd!!!

That new roof adds 45kg of weight up top though, but when we were behind the wheel earlier in the week there wasn’t a huge difference in feel.

Granted it probably swaps nose to tail a bit quicker when you want to be a hooligan, but through some twisting country roads it felt pretty much the same as the soft top.

Anyway, our full ramblings on the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! can be seen after the jump.

More like a modern day AC Ace, except the soft top is a closer match.

The V8 Flyin’ Miata soft top is more like the Cobra.

I do believe the lack of a v8 makes it a modern AC Ace.

Kinja'd!!!

You’re right though, the general swoopyness of the MX5 does remind me of the Ace/Cobra.

How’s the wind noise with the top down at highway speeds?

Edit: just read your comment about it in the article. Too bad.

So somebody put a 427 in it, immediately.

I see no issue with this.

The modern AC Cobra is clearly this:

With the roof down it’s quite blowy, the wind seems to rip around between the rear pillars.

But yeah...with the roof up the wind noise coming in by the passenger isn’t great :-/

I hate Kinja. Was supposed to be a picture of the Flyin Miata ND LS3 .

Fingers crossed they were just niggles with early models!

Needs moar power. Mazda’s M2 Incorporated built two 3.0L quad-cam V6-powered, suspension and rear subframe (including LSD) from a RX-7, widebody NA Miata called the M2-1006. Sadly this was ‘92-’93 right before the economic bubble popped.

I know Mini-Tec/SuperFastMiata out of Savanna, GA offers kits to hook up a J-series Honda/Acura V6 motor into NA and NB Miatas. I’m tempted to go that route if my mill ever bites the dust.

No self-respecting Cobra has an LS motor.
